The Ministry of Textiles has announced plans to run a nationwide Swadeshi campaign over the next six to nine months to boost domestic demand for handloom, handicrafts and textile products — particularly among urban millennials and Gen Z.
The Government said that after implementation of the campaign, “domestic demand shall increase by a CAGR of 9–10% per annum to reach a total domestic demand of textiles of US $ 250 billion by 2030.”
India’s textiles and clothing market was valued at about US $ 179 billion in 2024, growing at more than 7% annually.
The Ministry highlighted that the household sector contributes 58% to the domestic textiles market, growing at a CAGR of about 8.19%, while non-household consumption stands at 21%, with a CAGR of roughly 6.79%.
According to the announcement, the Swadeshi campaign will be run all over India to deepen textile consumption among young consumers, while also aiming to improve market access and income opportunities for weavers, artisans and MSMEs.
Government entities including ministries, public sector undertakings and educational institutions will be encouraged to adopt Indian-made textiles for uniforms and furnishings.
The campaign also seeks to reposition Indian textiles as symbols of pride and style, especially for younger generations.
The initiative is intended to complement existing programmes such as the PLI Scheme for Textiles, PM MITRA Parks, and the One District One Product scheme.
Recent reductions in GST (Goods & Services Tax) rates are expected to further stimulate demand in both household and non-household sectors, potentially accelerating consumption growth in textiles nationwide.
