India’s textile industry recorded a 3.6% decline in production in March, reflecting a broad slowdown across key segments. Apparel was the worst hit, with ready-made garment output falling 14.6% year on year due to weak demand and rising costs.
Fabric production also declined, led by a sharp drop in polyester-viscose blends, while cotton and home textile segments saw moderate contraction.
The downturn is driven by surging input costs, including higher prices for cotton yarn, chemicals, and packaging materials, alongside supply chain disruptions linked to West Asia tensions.
With logistics challenges and volatile energy prices adding pressure, the sector is expected to remain cautious in the near term.
